Henri hebert

Lawrence Hayward Collection

I can still see myself standing in deep snow trying to photograph the War memorial at Outremont.  The bas-relief work he did on the Hospital were situated up high and posed a problem of angle and light.  A couple of other works are in public view in Montreal but that is all I ever found.
Yarmouth Boy a war memorial is a fine soldier monument.  The Memorials in the Cemeteries are no less artistic with bas-reliefs of the deceased placed on the stone.  Mr. Taillon and Forget busts are examples of his portraits.
A statue of Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine full figure is in Montreal and one placed in front of parliament in Quebec City.
Many people have seen photos of his Evangeline in Nova Scotia.  For the first time I can see the memorial he did for the Charet family in the cemetery St. Michel, Sherbrooke, Quebec.
The busts that are in the National Gallery of Canada of Jongers are strong works executed like those of his father.  I am fond of his studies of the dancing females no matter how many and how graceful they all pose.
I talked to Mr. Donat Soucy about Henri and he knew very little about him also.  He said he was one of the few who knew when he died.  He was a very handsome man according to the photos I have seen so far.
This is another example of an artist little known in his own country.  I hope this Online will make him an international sensation for he deserves it by now.
All of the sculptors I am presenting here are chosen out of several hundred artists all living and working in Canada.  There is no excuse they have to leave their own country and work and live somewhere else.
I want to thank the Musée du Quebec for this fine catalogue, which helps me and others to learn about our past artists.  This is one I would not like to miss.

As a son of such a famous sculptor, how do you follow in his footsteps? No less a sculptor then his father P. Hébert Henri pursued his career as a sculptor in Quebec.
The problem I had was to find his work where little publicity guided me.  Now that the Musée du Quebec had issued his exhibition catalogue I know for sure what and where he stands out in his field.
